Why do you want this job?
Why do you want this job?
Why do you specifically want to work *here*?
First, to answer these questions, you need to think about what is this *job*?
What is it giving you, and what does it require you give to
Is this a job for you to pay the bills?
Is this a job that lets you act out your values?
Is this a job that’s convenient (individual contributor role/low stakes/working remote/ doesn’t require much brain power?)
Is this a job that feeds your ego/need for status/ approval in some way (would you be excited to tell friends/family that you do this?) is that important to you?
Is this a job where you can overwork as a form of escapism?
Is this a temporary job — one that you’re seeking for right now.
On the other side of it- what does this job expect from you?
Maybe the JD was thorough and expansive?
Maybe it was bare bones.
Maybe it seems rigid and clear-cut , with prescriptive markers for success in the role?
Maybe it was a local government role with dry ass APS level criteria.
Maybe it turns out the role *isn’t* that “serious” a job.
Will you be expected to always be “on”
Will you be ultimately, someone to execute and pick up tasks without questioning?
What in the world does “dynamic” even mean?
Is there a secret code that you’re not privy to?
Does “fast paced environment” mean “you’ll be context switching often” or is it something more nefarious like “we’re understaffed due to high turnover and employee churn, so you’ll be doing double the work”?
Maybe they *are* actually building rocketships.
Perhaps, at this company “wearing multiple hats” really *does* mean exposure to different parts of the business- without compromising the security and safety of your core position.
It’s easy to get jaded and protective.
So why do you want this job?
